Artists: Raffaele Rossi

After studying at the Art School in Novara (1972), Raffaele Rossi - fascinated by the techniques of early Venetian painting - works in the workshops of two old Venetian masters, Valleria Rambelli and Ottone Malambini, and learns to produce oil and tempera colors from natural pigments and the corresponding binders and to prepare canvases and backgrounds.

At nearly the same time he visits the Scuola Libera del Nudo and the International Graphic Institute, both in Venice. In Ottone Malambini he finds his mentor, who introduces him to the mindset of anthroposophists. For several years he devotes his time to related studies and tries out new techniques. A particular preference for mortar and plaster develops. In combination with marble flour, sand and oil paint or tempera, both of which are mixed and produced by himself using natural pigments and egg yolk or oil, he creates his typical images, in which symbols of earlier cultures can be found, such as boat, vase, shell.

Raffaele Rossi frequently works with fingers and hands, only sporadically utilizing fine brushes – essentially just to carve the cryptic signs that draw their strength from the surrounding void into his work. His landscapes almost exist only in the imagination and in the impression of the moment. Barely perceived, they are vanishing again already, lost in the background. They are landscapes of the mind: figures emerge, shadowy, non-existent, changing, constantly transforming.
